Exploring the Power of Architecture in Facilitating Ultimate Healing
In the heart of a remote temple, we had the privilege of designing a space for meditation, learning, and worship—an environment that fosters peace, reflection, and spiritual growth.

The space is built for anyone who walks in, not necessarily a Buddhist. It is a fresh design attempt that bridges ancient and colonial temple architecture with contemporary Sri Lankan design.
The Buddha chamber reflects the colonial influence that was prominent in temples built during the colonial era. Although there is no obvious visual reference, the brick wall design is inspired by the wahalkada of the Anuradhapura era (377 BCE to 1017 CE), particularly for its proportions and ornamentation.

A conscious effort was made in material selection and color palette, ensuring all materials were locally sourced and sustainable. Built by the skilled masons of the area, this space embodies a deep connection to its surroundings and community.

The clean white masonry image house is set against the backdrop of a brick Jali wall. This structure faces a circular sand court with semicircular seating—an ideal setting for dhamma discussions and group reflections. The sand court also accommodates sakman bhāvanā (walking meditation) and other forms of meditative practice. As the temple continues to host sermons and spiritual gatherings, this space helps villagers purify their thoughts and remain focused—allowing them to engage more deeply with the teachings shared.
